GORDON HELPS LAUNCH NEW REGENERATION NETWORK FOR GLASGOW- 24 May 2012

Charlie Gordon, MD of Charlie Gordon Associates Limited, helped to launch a major new network for physical regeneration professionals in Glasgow by speaking in the inaugural “Stewart McIntosh Property Debate”  on whether Glasgow needs a directly-elected Mayor as a catalyst for further regeneration.

Charlie spoke against the motion for a directly-elected Mayor, which was moved by  solicitor Allison Newton, Head of HJB Gately’s Glasgow Office, under the neutral chairmanship of experienced property journalist, Stuart McIntosh.

Charlie opposed the principle of giving total executive power over Glasgow City Council to any one individual and pointed out that the present City Council could   provide  stimulus to Glasgow’s regeneration, as evidenced by the number of participants in the event who expressed satisfaction with the City Council’s regeneration role when Charlie himself had been the Council Leader.

In his first major public speech since leaving front-line politics to start his own regeneration consultancy business, Charlie emphasised that he shared Allison’s and indeed, everyone present’s  view on the need for more stimulus from the City Council for,  in Charlie’s mantra : “JOBS, JOBS AND JOBS”.

Charlie also said the debate was an important part of a wider debate on the value of local government in the face of ongoing centralisation by Holyrood.
On a straw poll, Allison’s proposal had the support of the majority of those present ; then it was time for networking over a buffet lunch, when  many attendees opined that  the creation of such a new network was itself  a  step forward for Glasgow’s regeneration sector.

The event was generously sponsored by regeneration company Tribeca  Glasgow, whose Chairman, John Dolby,  summed up its success in the following e mail  to Allison, Charlie and Stewart:-

“Guys, can I say what a terrific debate you put on .....Brilliant firm chairmanship from Stewart .Terrific erudite argument from Alison. And, I'm sorry Charlie, the vote went against you because everyone thought you should be the new mayor, you obviously did too good a job in the past!!! ”

I've had nothing but great feedback really a terrific job!

Regards
John Dalby

Whilst the debate was not recorded, in true “Here’s one I made earlier” style,  Allison and Charlie rehearsed their arguments for BBC Radio Scotland’s “John Beattie Show” on 24 May 2012, so if you missed the event, why not visit the below link to the BBC iPlayer?
